Mont- Blanc
French side

This section on Mont-Blanc is spread across several pages.
There are French pages and Italian pages. By following the pages
you will go up the French side, across the mountain top and down the Italian
side to a B&B I stayed in overnight. What a view in the morning and at
$10.00 for a room and breakfast, what a bargain.
Mont- Blanc is on the French - Italian border in the Alps. It is the tallest
mountain in Europe. There are glaciers and ice fields on the summit. People go
skiing there in mid-summer. There are cable cars that you can ride up to the ice
and snow fields, if you don't want to make the 6 hour climb. I did the trip from Entréves,
Italy to Chamonix, France by six cable cars. The one between the Italian and
French peaks is over 5 Km long.
The French peak is called " Aiguille De Midi ". It is 3842m or 12,602
feet above sea level.

France.
Chamonix was the site of the first Winter Olympic Games in
1924.The International Olympic Committee did not sanction a Winter
Olympics until 1925. A gathering of 16 national teams at the International
Winter Sports Week in 1924, however, would be inevitably recognized as the
first official Winter Games. The first Winter Games consisted of 14 events
in five sports (Nordic skiing, figure skating, speed skating, hockey and
bobsledding).

Aiguille De Midi cable station and the view of Chamonix beyond. The
mountain on the other side of Chamonix has many ski areas and cable cars.
The picture was taken from the rocky peak of To get there you walk through a 200 ft rock
tunnel and then take an elevator to the top. There is a TV broadcast antenna located
on the very top of the peak. |
